FIN 301

Company finance analysis

About this guide

This guide identifies the resources that will help you complete your analysis of the financial situation of the company you have chosen for the FIN 301 project.

Company Website

  • Search for your company using Google or Bing.
  • You can also use the website listed at the top of the home page on Mergent Online.
  • You usually have to scroll down to the bottom of the corporate website and look for Investors or Investor Relations.
  • Most companies will post various quarterly earnings reports and other financial information.

IBISWorld

  • This resource reports the economic outlook and conditions for various industries. While there is not much about individual companies, it is important to know how the company compares to the industry as a whole.
  • Be sure to look at both the US Industry (NAICS) Report (usually the default page) and the US Industry iExpert Summaries Report (the icon looks like a light bulb) to discover key industry data.

Mergent Online

  • This resource is for companies that are publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
  • Look at stock trends, key financials and news on the landing page.
  • Take note of the NAICS number for evaluating this company against the industry as a whole (next databse, IBISWorld). You may need to look under the subsection for a secondary NAICS if the primary NAICS isn't what you want to focus on.
  • Look at the Company Financials tab. Look at the sub-tabs for Ratios and Analysis.
  • Look at the Annual Reports tab. Choose the latest 10K report. Remember, not all companies operate on a Jan-Dec annual fiscal year calendar. Look at any Interim reports. If there are none, you will have to visit the company's website.
